One of the eight founders of the club.
Tony was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Service at the 2003 AGM.
He was also granted Special Honorary Membership on 27th March 2003 (from records in Item 2022.408.2 Club Officials and Staff Records 2009).
Prior to becoming a founder of MGGC, Kelly was a member of Royal Fremantle Golf Club. Content from “The History of Royal Fremantle Golf Club 1905 - 2005 publication” authored by Richard Fuller states that Kelly:
- Served as the club professional in 1959-60 after Tommy Howard, (the father of MGGC inaugural course designer Al Howard) passed away, and again in 1973-78
- Won the Club Championship in 1966
- Served as the Director of Golf for a period after 1966
He, along with many others, resigned from RFGC in 1967 after the club proposed to raise funds from members via a levy and interest free loan. With Harold Ingram they joined the other six who became the founders of MGGC. Later, as stated above, he returned to RFGC to serve as the club professional during the 1970s.
A picture of Kelly appears on page 128 of the RFGC history publication.
Several photographs are shown of Tony Kelly.
The earliest (circa late 1940s) was taken on the practice fairway of St Michael’s Golf Club, Sydney, when Tony was a teenager and long before he came to Western Australia. This photograph was given to close friend John Cusack by Tony and subsequently donated to the Melville Glades archive by John’s daughter Anne Clugston. The words ‘Best wishes John … Tony Kelly 21st June 1989’ appear on it. Tony and John also purchased adjoining blocks in Melville Heights and built homes next door to one another.
The picture of Tony seated and wearing a MGGC shirt was taken from the inaugural MGGC men’s pennant team photograph taken in 1972. The colour is severely affected due to light damage with the photograph hanging on a wall for many decades.
Picture three has been taken from the photograph that appeared in the Golden Anniversary Booklet when he played a round of golf at Melville with co-founder Ted Grigg. This is dated 1999.
Picture four was provided by Max Hannah and shows Tony in casual clothes and looking happy. This photograph is dated circa 2010.
Picture five shows Tony (wearing a blue suit with a white striped tie) was taken in 2017.
Picture six was taken from the Founders of MGGC Honour Board photograph.
