Men's Match Play Championship (Gross) (Tony Kelly Trophy)
1976 -
The qualifying round for the Men's Match Play (Gross) Championship is currently an 18 hole stroke play round. The top eight gross scorers qualify for the match play finals: quarters, semis and final rounds, all played over 18 holes with matches extended into sudden death if tied after 18 holes.
The order of play is seeded based on qualifying scores with 1st vs 8th, 2nd vs 7th, etc. These three knockout rounds have typically been played over consecutive Saturdays following the qualifying round. To provide some flexibility, in 2025 this was amended with the first two knockout rounds played on an agreed date between the opponents within a set period of time before the final round occurred on the following Saturday to facilitate presentations.
The name of the event honours one of the club's founders, Tony Kelly.
It should also be noted that the Men's Championship was played in match play format between 1969 and 1973 before it became a stroke play event. It is not known why there is a gap for the years 1974 and 1975 before this Match Play Championship was commenced.
