TENNIS RACQUET SET: WOODEN RACQUET WITH COVER AND PRESS
(a) Tennis Racquet: wooden framed (made in Pakistan), light coloured timber, varnished. Frame decorated cream paint, blue tape. Nylon strings (clear) intact. Handle neatly bound in black leather.
(b) Racquet cover, leather: machine stitched. Zipper opening 'Lightning' brand zip with tan coloured cotton, metal teeth. Zip has been restitched (by hand) with light-coloured thread. Inside of cover marked 'S M Kennedy'.
(c) Racquet press: light coloured timber, marked with age. Four long metal screws (one at each corner) fastened with wing nuts. One fastening has a metal spring. Washers at each corner (2 missing). Name 'I. McDonald' written on the front.
An example of a wooden framed tennis racquet used before synthetic materials became available for frames. Wooden framed racquets with gut strings were susceptible to warping in damp conditions and the use of racquet presses prevented this problem.
