TOY: DOLL'S PRAM, GREY, FEHLBERG FAMILY

Overview

Dolls pram with grey painted wooden bassinet and grey hood on an iron frame with porcelain handle. The artificial leather hood canopy is grey with a faded blue/purple fabric interior. The wooden bassinet has been repainted grey. The pram in the style of a traditional, coach-built pram also known as a perambulator or baby carriage. The iron frame has suspension provided by leather straps. The 4 iron wheels are of equal size with metal spokes, and some have remnants of the original rubber tyre.

A padded cushion mattress with a zip sits in the base of the bassinet, but does not appear to be original.

Historical information

This pram and a doll (see 2025.11.a-j) were given to June Winifred Waters (the donor's mother) on 18 June 1927 for her 4th birthday. She lived in Edwards Town, South Australia. At some stage the pram was repainted grey. The original finish can be seen in the photograph 2025.12.1.

June took the married name Braine. Her daughter Julianne recalls playing with the doll after it was given to her as a 5 year old in 1964, but doesn't recall playing with the pram. Around the 1990s the pram was sent to Julianne's house in Shenton Park. Julianne's daughters Anna and Zoe played with the pram, but rarely with the doll due to its fragility. In the two years before it was donated the pram was used by the donor's granddaughter Matilda who was 4.5 years old at the time of donation.
