The writer, Matthew Ritchie (1830-92) was an Enrolled Pensioner Guard granted land at Greenough.
James Southgate (?-1899) was a labourer at Greenough.
Michael Fleming (1819-?) was convicted of highway robbery and sent to Western Australia in 1855 (no.3366). He later returned to England.

Please Mr Maley
To supply James Southgate with Tea Sugar and Flour as he is putting up fensing for me and dont let M Fleing have anything more from the Store except 2 pounds which clears him and me

This is one of only two notes we have associated with Fleming (the other is also from Ritchie). It provides evidence of the type of work undertaken, and how occasionally employers relied on storekeepers to pay their labourers.
