Cigarette Card - "Major C Yate"
Collectible Cigarette Cards: "Wills's Specialities" was the name given to specific sets of cigarette cards issued by the British tobacco company W.D. & H.O. Wills.
The cards were produced in various series with different themes, including
"War Incidents" Series (1915) depicting events and scenes from World War I.

Back of card: "Victoria Cross Heroes" with a handwritten message "to Mary from A Fraser 1916"
Also, at the back of card is the following typed text:
"The Late Major Yate, 2nd Batt, Kings Own Yorks, LI.
This brave officer was awarded the VC in recognition of an act of desperate gallantry at Le Cateau on August 26th,1914.
He commanded one of the two companies that remained in the trenches until all the ammunition was exhausted, and then at the head of all that remained of his company (20 in all) charged the enemy.

Charles Allix Lavington YATE

Died: 20 Sep 1914
Major Charles Allix Lavington Yate was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) in the First World War for his actions during the Battle of Le Cateau on August 26, 1914, while serving with the 2nd Battalion of The King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry ("KOYLI"). He commanded a company that stayed in the trenches to the end, leading the remaining 19 survivors in a charge after other officers were killed and ammunition was exhausted. He was captured and later died after attempting to escape a prisoner-of-war camp by cutting his own throat to avoid recapture
