Contextual information

Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952, following the death of her father, King George VI, at the age of 25, and was formally proclaimed queen shortly thereafter.

The coronation took place more than a year later to allow a period of mourning and to provide sufficient time for meticulous planning and preparation for the ceremony, which involved multiple committees chaired by her husband, Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and the Duke of Norfolk, the Earl Marshal responsible for the event’s organisation.
