Historical information

Email received from Elizabeth Jilley:

"The majority of the handkerchiefs belonged to my mother, Marjory Hancock..
My parents retired to Dunsborough and both played bowls at the local Country Club. Crochet hand gloves were worn back then to protect the hands, so my mother crocheted hers.
Also, the white handkerchiefs in those days were part of the white dress code worn for bowls and so hence her supply.

I went to a private school in Perth, and boarded there for 5 yrs. Handkerchiefs in those days were also a required part of our clothing list.
Mine were even personalised with name tags for the laundry so I would get them back!
On Sundays, we wore a special white dress to go to church and so hence the white handkerchief with my initial on it.

My mother and father (Roy Hancock) owned the Highway Hotel in Bunbury for over 20 years post WW2. In its heyday, the hotel was very popular, earning it the title "pub selling the most beer in the State".

I am 75 now and also living in Dunsborough. My husband and I own Cave’s House Hotel in Yallingup.

Sincerely, Libby Jilley "
