LAKE VIEW, MIDDLETON ROAD, ALBANY C1895

c. 1895
Overview

A black and white reproduction of a sepia print of "Lake View", Middleton Road, Western Australia, Charles Tuckfield's property, sometime in 1895. Charles is sitting on the verandah with his eldest daughter Winifred (b1889), his wife Kate is sitting in the pony trap with their other two daughters, Denise (b1891 and Dorothy (b1893). The pony, Polly, is in the shafts.

Historical information

Charles Tuckfield originally bought the property as Plantagenet location No. 45, and the house was built in 1888. The property was originally surveyed sometime before 1834, about the same time as Sir Richard Spencer's farm, Strawberry Hill, on the adjacent Plantagenet location No. 44. Tuckfield built the house when he first married Kate Woodman by blowing up a huge nearby granite rock to provide materials. The home later gradually fell into disrepair after the family moved to England, until about 1950, when another Charles Tuckfield, grandson of the original builder, reused the stone to build himself a house nearer the road.
