THE OCTAGONAL CHURCH, ALBANY 1893
1893A black and white photographic image of the original Octagonal Church in Albany taken just before demolition. This image is a 1962 reproduction of an earlier 1893 photograph and shows the south-facing aspect of the derelict building with a collapsing shingled roof and distressed wattle and daub main structure. In the background, on the right are buildings on the opposite side of Duke Street with the characteristic sharper roof lines of later steel-clad buildings.
The Octagonal Church was built by Thomas Brooker Sherratt in 1835. Throughout its existence, it served as a church, court house, school, and meeting place until it was demolished in 1894. This reproduction of the original 1893 photograph was produced by William Littleheart of the "Littleheart" photographic studio Albany in 1962.
