ELLEN COVE JETTY, MIDDLETON BEACH HOTEL, ALBANY 1911

c. 1911
Overview

Black and white image of the Ellen Cove jetty Albany. In the background, a large crowd are spread out along the beach from Ellen's Cove with the newly completed (all brick) Middleton Beach Hotel behind them.

Historical information

The new hotel seen here replaced the original all-timber Esplanade Hotel, destroyed by fire on the same site in 1908. The new Esplanade, constructed in masonry, boasted all modern conveniences: a septic system, electric light, telephones and hot water! Some claimed firsts for Albany included limited undercover garage parking, a children's nursery, drawing and billiards rooms with a patrons dining room able to seat seventy people.

Contextual Information

The large beach-going crowd is interestingly unlike a modern scene in that almost no one is swimming; most are strolling fully clothed, and the people share the beach with numerous horses, ponies and dogs.
