TUCKFIELD PATENT STEAM LAUNCH POWERED BY EUREKA ENGINE, ALBANY, C1899

c. 1899
Overview

Black and white reproduction from a sepia print of the Tuckfield patent Steam Launch run by his new EUREKA engine. Photograph taken in Princess Royal Harbour, probably in 1898.

Historical information

It was the promotion of this invention that brought the Tuckfield family to England on board the Orient line ship ORMUZ, with the "EUREKA powered steam launch" slung in davits. The innovation was not an engine as such but the application of Tuckfield's condenser patent for supplying process water to conventional steam engines. It failed to capture much interest in England and this attempt to capitalise on the patent eventual failed much as the original WA Condenser Co venture had in 1895-96.
