Overview

A black cast iron sewing machine. It is on a ornate base, the base is hinged at the back allowing the machine to be swung back. The wheel is iron with a wooden handle which drives the machine.

Inscriptions and markings

There is a makers mark on the bobbin case cover, however it is not distinguishable.

On the sewing bed of the machine is a white label with black typed lettering "This Machine was owned by Mrs. J.B. Patterson who made her wedding frock on it in 1884 at Hamley Bridge, South Australia. She brought it to 'Cartmeticup' in 1900, and used it until 1914. Donated by Mr. Hamley Patterson".
