GENERAL EMBROIDERY, CUSHION COVER
c. 1940 - 1949This cushion cover is an example of World War II hand embroidery using fabric and threads to hand in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1943. The colour combination is unusual but the stitching is very neat and well finished.
Using a brown cotton fabric the circular pattern comprises a central motif of eight kite shapes inside two rows of chain stitch. These are encircled by a padded satin stitch circle and four semicircles with seed stitch. The outer edge comprises four (4) motifs made up of padded ovals and leaf shapes with chain stitch swirls and loops . A filled rouleau loop is on the outer edge ready for the cushion to be completed.
