Carved sailor barware item - corkscrew
c. 1940Corkscrew with a painted, carved timber depiction of the head and shoulders of a sailor. He is wearing his white cap with dark blue tally band and sailor suit of light and dark blue with a flap collar at the back. He has a round face and a comical expression, with bulging eyes both turned to one side.
The corkscrew is made from metal which has a little surface rust.
There are no maker's marks but it is believed to have been made in Italy by Anri.
Another carved figural sailor in the form of a bottle opener is also in the collection, perhaps part of a larger bar set.
Anri, a company in Italy, have produced wooden carved figural corkscrews from the turn of the 20th century. This example is believed to date to the mid 20th Century.
