APPLIQUE, GENERAL EMBROIDERY, HANGING

2021
Overview

A triptych hanging embroidered by members of the Innovative Stitchers Group for the exhibition “Signals, Cyphers and Stories” held in 2021 at the Wireless Hill Museum.

Each panel depicts a stitched representation of an historic photo from the City of Melville collection thought to be a celebration of the completion of the telecommunication mast built at Wireless Hill in 1912.

Titled ‘Remember Them’ the design consists of three grey organza panels onto which 12 individual figures, taken from the photo, are appliqued by individual members of the group using a variety of grey fabrics and stitch techniques.

This piece reflects a photo taken of a group of people at the base of the Wireless Hill tower, circa 1912.

It is thought that the group might be those involved in building the tower. The original photo is from the city of Melville Photographic Collection.

The design was drawn up and enlarged, detailing 12 figures from the original photo. The figures were sewn on rectangular pieces of organza and appliqued onto the background by embroiderers – Suzanne Coleman, Lynn Peirce, Delores Cuenca, Geraldine Peterkin, Jennie Abbott, Helen Jones, Diane Herbert, Lyn Wieck, Anne Illman, Glen Hall, Claire Sas, Val Osman.
