The Prefects of 2006 have had a full and exciting year...although really, it all began last year with the gruelling and nail-biting nomination process, which resulted in an eight girl and four boy committee being chosen. Once we were selected, we set out to the young leaders conference in Perth, in order to develop our skills as leaders, and to get to know each other ( we also got a little lesson from Mr. Mazzella on ‘how to avoid Perth’s peak hour traffic when you are running late and in a bus, which may or may not have been slightly illegal!).
In 2006, we helped the Year 8’s get to know each other through games nights. Although a bit hectic, we got to know the new students, taught them a few things ( such as you don’t have to be big to make everyone listen to you, and just because that egg is boiled, doesn’t mean that it won’t make a huge mess if you drop it when playing leader ball), and got to scout the crowd for future Prefects! (We also got Maccas before we went, which was an added bonus.)
We proudly held our own ANZAC Ceremony, which entered a film competition, and attended the Bunbury City Council Ceremony to honor Australia’s war heroes.
Our leadership and team skills, along with our bonds with each other, were further developed when we piled into the bus and headed off to Prefect Camp at Logue Brook, for three days of horseriding, abseiling (there’s nothing like watching someone getting tea-bagged to bring a tear of sympathy (or laughter) to your eye), home-cooked feasts, sea-biscuiting in the dam (unfortunately, all photographic evidence of Mrs. Mutton joining has since been “lost”), flying-foxing, watersliding, and sing-alongs (no, really!). Then came our fist official duties as Prefects.
We proudly displayed our house colours and cheered on the competing students at the sports carnival (seriously though, we all knew Wallaston was going to win—no doubt ). Finally we helped raise money for Daffodil Day and Amnesty International, collecting lots of money to help those in need.
Overall, with our meetings (every Wednesday lunchtime), group feedings, countless efforts to help better the school, and a lot of help from our fabulous Year Co-coordinator Mrs. Mutton, we feel 2006 has been a very successful year!
