2009 promised to be a year unlike any other for the 2009 Prefects. Suddenly bombarded with invitations, jobs and roles by the community - we were thrown into the deep end of public appearances and told to swim. So we did! In the beginning we had opinions about everything and anything - outrageous ideas that could help benefit the school and environment. The idea of brutally punishing those who littered with lunchtime detentions was incredibly tempting. We were soon put back in our place however by the authorities - apparently Prefects don’t have the power to administer lunchtime detentions. The ideas continued to come thick and fast though - rewards from the canteen for those who picked up the rubbish. In hindsight some may have only been thinking of what was in their bellies rather than what was on the ground. Ideas of elaborate socials in the gym for lower school were brought to a halt because of bans. We were optimistic because when one idea leads to a dead end, we jumped aboard another. We all geared ourselves up (quite literally) for the athletics assembly. Rivalry was strong and fierce between the factions as cheering competitions drowned out all the other sounds. The costumes were extravagant, original and nearly always entertaining. When Lock announced that participation numbers were higher than they’d ever been, we liked to think it was our smoothly run, highly entertaining and fabulously held assembly. Either way, the school spirit was roaring come athletics day.
Soon Year 12 began to take its toll on the Prefects, and our ideas and enthusiasm slowed. The stress of exams and study preyed on our every thought and we found that juggling our responsibilities and school work was becoming increasingly difficult. Our superhuman ideas for the school had to take the backseat for a while. A gigantic thank you goes out to Ms Morgan, for always pointing us in the right direction, offering an ear if we needed it, putting up with our forgetful antics and consistently reminding us of our duties. We certainly wouldn’t have survived without her. So thanks a million Ms Morgan.
As this is being written, there is one week left of school - which is both incredibly exciting and rather daunting. The prospect of there being life after school is strange and certainly appealing. I’m sure no one will argue that they are looking forward to doing sweet nothings. Sleep-ins and not having to think are going to be embraced with arms wide open. To the people we have spent day in day out with over the last five years, and for some it could be 12, we want to wish you all the best of luck for everything and anything that you try, that you lead happy lives and that every once in a while you remember your fellow Bunbury High mates and the times you shared with them. On behalf of the 2009 Prefects, to everyone at Bunbury High, thank you and all the best.
