Overview

Black and white photographic image from an early 127 film negative of machinery in the W.A. Worsted & Woollen Mills Ltd (Albany) taken some time after the factory opened in the Feb 1925. This is one in a series from P2003.357-364. Based on the selection of images in this series it appears to be arranged to show the textile milling process at the Albany mill, from wool carding equipment, to spinning, to weaving.

Historical information

The origin of the name - WA Worsted & Woollen Mills Ltd.
In 1922 the WA Government in the form of the Western Australian Council of Industrial Development called for the creation of the Western Australian Worsted & Woollen Mills Ltd as a state promoted enterprise which was to have a capital of 250,000 pounds in one pound shares. The funds were to be raised by public subscription from throughout the state.
The terms worsted and woollen in W.A Worsted and Woollen Mills refer to the two different processes involved in spinning the yarn used in the production of wool textiles, be it high quality worsted cloth fabrics or woollen blankets or yarns for knitwear.
