Sweetheart brooch made from two sixpences - enamelled and plain - 1887-1889

c. 1900
Overview

Sweetheart brooch made from two British silver sixpence coins. The coin on the left has hand-painted enamel detailing highlighting the central heraldic shield and a bright blue outer garter border.
The motto of the Order of the Garter, 'HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE', appears in a white circle around the central shield. The date '1887' is embedded in the blue enamel at the bottom. It is actually the reverse of the coin, with the obverse featuring the 'Jubilee Head' effigy of Queen Victoria wearing her small imperial crown and veil, visible from the back of the brooch.
Some of the enamel is chipped or missing, espeically the white layer containing the motto.
The coin on the right has the obverse displayed. The reverse has the denomination 'SIX PENCE' crowned within an olive and oak wreath with the 1889 date at the bottom.
The enamelled coin slgihtly overlays the plain coin and the two are soldered together where they join. There is a pin clasp to the reverse but while the fittings remain, the pin itself is missing.

Historical information

1887 was Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, celebrating 50 years since she ascended the throne in 1837. Coins were enamelled to be sold as souvenirs of the event for use as pendants, stick pins and brooches. Examples of different sizes were made from florins, shillings and sixpences.
