Whale carved from baleen and etched on surface. Two whaling barques are shown, both of which have half flensed whales at their sides. A whaleboat with six sailors aboard is at the left (full details on Data Record Sheet).

Made by Jesper Rassmussen from Albany (Reference: Jill Bell 20.3.99 conversation. with AG. Baleen said to be taken from blue whale.

Statement of significance

This item has social and historical significance. It was made by a local Albany artist, using materials taken from whales harvested by the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company when it was operational. Objects such as these were carved by former employees and locals who acquired whalebone, ivory and baleen from the whaling station.
