SCRIMSHAW (SAILING SHIP)
c. 1960Whale's tooth, polished and scrimshawed. On one side is a sailing ship in full sail, travelling from left to right. On reverse side - writing enclosed in a frame of leaves and signed underneath. Tooth has broken away at the point and has splits running vertically from the bottom.
This tooth was scrimshawed by Ches Stubbs who was captain of the Cheynes III. It was given in friendship to Jack Davies, who was originally a 'powder monkey' and original shareholder of the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company.

This item has social and historical significance. It was made by a local Albany artist, using materials taken from whales harvested by the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company when it was operational. Objects such as these were carved by former employees and locals who acquired whalebone, ivory and baleen from the whaling station.
