Historical information

Albert James Atkinson (1893-1944), son of John Atkinson (1860-1939) and Emma Mary Janes (1869-1935), was born at Butlers Swamp, Claremont on 9 September 1893.

Enlisted on 9 September 1914. Was assigned to 'C' company on 16 October 1914. Received a shrapnel wound to the hand on 24 August 1915. A fractured skull and shrapnel wounds suffered on 31 August 1915 on the Gallipoli Peninsular led to Albert returning to Australia and being medically discharged on 10 July 1916.

Married Rose Florence Mathews (1899-1968) at Claremont during 1929.

Enlisted in the Australian Army (W243436) on 31 May 1940. Served in the 10th Garrison Battalion, a WWII army unit raised in Western Australia that protected the coastal artillery on Rottnest Island. Discharged on 15 August 1940.

Albert died on 10 March 1944 aged 50.
Rose died 18 Jan 1968 aged 69.
