B19 Group Settlement Cream Room

Overview

This replica Group Settlement Cream Room was constructed by Busselton Historical Society member John Messer in 2021 to replace a previous replica building that had become unsafe.

Every Group Settlement farm Cream Room was stocked with a cream separator, cream cans and milk pails.

As the cream was stored in the Cream Room between pickups, cooling was an important function of the Cream Room. Cooling was achieved by creating a 12 inch gap between the cement floor and the base of the walls which was enclosed by flyscreen. The Separator would have been firmly attached to the cement floor.

Historical information

Each Group Settlement Farm had a dairy which consisted of a cow shed, cow yards and cream room.

After the cows had been milked in the cow shed, the milk was taken to the Cream Room where the cream would be separated and the waste milk taken away and fed to the calves and pigs. Twice a week the local Butter Factory would send trucks to pick up the cream cans and return empty cans from the previous pickup.
