B8 Rotunda
1995The Rotunda is a replica of a pavilion that was formerly located on the Old Busselton Jetty and was constructed on the banks of the Vasse River as part of the development of the Busselton Museum in the 1990’s.
This replica Rotunda was built by builder Bob Walker in 1995 who based his design on historical photographs of the original jetty pavilion. $6,000 of the total cost of the project was funded by South West Development Commission. The floor is concrete, the roof is clad with pre-painted corrugated steel sheeting and some old jetty timbers were recycled for the timberwork.
The Rotunda is now used by museum visitors who wish to take a rest and enjoy the scenic Vasse river and the amazing Tuart trees that tower above.
The original pavilion on the jetty, locally known as “the Rotunda”, was built in 1898 when extensive improvements were made to the Busselton Jetty. It was constructed at the No. 1 head, which was how the first end point of the 1875 jetty became known. The pavilion was a pleasant place to sit during both summer and winter as it had 6 feet high panelling on the east and west sides and ample seating. It was used for band concerts and other activities until its demolition in 1958.
