Overview

Watercolour wash, ink and gouache on paper of the aft section of the White Star liner SS SEUVIC. She was salvaged after she ran aground on Lizard Pt, U.K., on the night of March 17th 1907. It shows the hull cut across at the No 3 hold with the aft hold bulkhead coloured pale grey and the hull coloured dark grey, with light grey for the below water area.

Historical information

Later, to serve throughout the Great War as the Australian troopship HMAT Suevic (A29). First in the second ANZAC convoy Dec 1914, to last, ferrying the wounded home in 1919.

Inscriptions and markings

Hand written in pencil in the lower surround is "Drawn (from cable advice) by C.J. Batallier" & "An Marine Engineering Feat. The Salvaged Section of the Stranded White Star Service which is now": "The Suevic struck the Brandies under the lighthouse at the Lizard on the night of Mar 18th in a fog and remained fast. As only the fore part was badly damaged the vessel was cut in two across No 3 hold. The work was successfully accomplished in April 2 and the after portion containing the engines floated off the rocks." In the right hand surround four comments handwritten in pencil are contained, namely: "A Marine Eng. Feat"; The repaired White Star Service"; "The Suevic stuck": & "was cut....ton new bow joined on". Below the comments is a pencil sketch of the stern of the SUEVIC.
