GENERAL EMBROIDERY, SAMPLER
1889This embroidered sampler was stitched in Scotland in 1889 by the donor’s paternal grandmother, Jessie Borland aged 12 years. Samplers were part of a young girl’s education in late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Rows of upper case and lower case alphabet letters in different fonts including serif and Old English, have been stitched in wool on linen canvas. Stitches are cross stitch, square stitch, eyelet, and back stitch.
At the bottom is the inscription: “Jessie Borland
Stonehouse
Oct 1889”
