WHITEWORK, BEDSPREAD
A fine example of true whitework, design not stamped, but probably used tissue paper method with running stitches.
This Queen size bedspread, Belfast linen, woven the width of the bed has no hems on sides, only top and bottom.
Hemstitching used to create a hem top and bottom: on the sides, a stitched border an equal distance from the edge to make it look like a hem.
Plain central rectangle, outlined in hemstitching. Beyond is a band of floral sprays in satin stitch – padded and flat, eyelet, satin dots and couching. Beyond a border of broderie anglaise outlined in hemstitching. Floral sprays beyond.
Worked on Belfast linen, also known as Altar Linen in Ireland,
Unfinished – tacking line and loose threads evident.
First stage of deterioration, where folded.
