Historical information

This gold medal was presented to James R. Drummond in 1927 for having the best bowling average for the Bedfordale Cricket Club during the 1926-1927 'B' Grade season.

James R. Drummond, with his young family, moved to Bedfordale in the mid-1920s where he joined the Bedfordale Cricket Club and quickly established himself as a top order batter and a very handy bowler.

Bedfordale competed in the ‘B’ Grade of the South Suburban Cricket Association. In the 1926-27 season Bedfordale was very competitive thanks in part to the batting and bowling of James.

In a game against Manning in December 1926, James scored 91 runs and took 6 wickets for 19 runs. Though the team didn’t win the end of season trophy James finished the season with 59 wickets and a bowling average of 5.7, the second best in the ‘B’ Grade completion and the best at Bedfordale. James didn’t seem to play for the next couple of seasons but was back at the club, terrifying batsmen, in 1931.

During the 1980s local school student Ian Boresma found the medal when exploring old properties in the Wungong area. He discovered this medal in the remains of a rubbish pit at the former home of Levi Butcher.
