First World War Black and White Photograph of Turkish Airplane Wreck

1917
Overview

A small black and white photograph showing nine Light Horsemen standing by the wreck of an airplane. Some of the troopers are examining the plane while others look to the camera. One other trooper is sat down at the side of the plane. Only a small amount of the carcass of the plane remains, although the position of its twin engines and its 4 landing wheels can be seen. There is a pile of wreckage on the ground in front of the plane that appears to be remnants of the wings. The photograph has a small border and is in good condition, although the image does show many marks when enlarged. There are also some effects from the development process. The reverse has part of the proforma printing for a postcard and a handwritten inscription in pen.

Historical information

Based on the location noted on the reverse of the image it is possible that this picture is taken on 10 November 1917 at El Faluje. The 10th Light horse bivouacked there for the night. The village had an adjacent airstrip where seven destroyed airplanes were discovered.
