CLAREMONT FORESHORE, VIEWS EAST OF CLAREMONT YACHT CLUB

1955
Overview

B/W Prints. (a) View of river, foreshore and houses on either side of Victoria Avenue. Small boats are anchored in the bay. The bungalow at the extreme left, with jetty and pens, is the Claremont Yacht Club prior to alteration and extension in early 1960s. To the right of it is a large block extending to the shore with a two storey federation style building fronting Victoria Avenue. On the foreshore behind the next two storey building is the Mews Boat shed with a lean-to on the western side. Next is a small shed and dinghy with a path leading to the rear of Harry Lawrie Court. The property on the right with a sprawling house set well back from Victoria Avenue, and a boat shed partly obscured by bushes, is that belonging to James John Mews. (b) Alternative view of the foreshore with yacht club on the extreme right and Bay View Terrace and the Mansions on the extreme left.

Historical information

The Mews family have been involved in boat / ship building in W.A. since the 1830's. In 1943 Peter Mews purchased the boatshed at 8 Victoria Ave after the death of Emily Cooper wife of George Cooper (previous owner). In mid 1980s Chris Mews began to realise the importance of the shed to the state's maritime heritage and contacted Claremont Museum for assistance with its preservation. Funds were granted through Federal Government's New Work Opportunities Scheme to relocate and house the boatshed in a new shed on the Museum site.
