Overview

A varnished wooden covered booklet of eighteen pages of brown paper with sewing samples attached either by thread or glue. The booklet is held together with brown shoe laces. The front cover has a green stencilled rectangle with brown lettering inside the rectangle.

Historical information

The models feature stitches uses at different levels of needlework study. Simple tacking and cross-stitching on gingham fabric & huckaback darning which the girls had to master before moving into more intricate work such as embroidery and fine patchwork. Many of the samples are baby clothes. On the first page are ten pages on "Needlework Notes" which are sewn to the brown paper sheet. The inside cover of the booklet is signed by J. Gale nee Bowden. Mrs. Gale made the sewing samples when she attended Claremont Teachers Training College before she began teaching in Katanning. At the time the girl students began sewing classes in their second year then known as Std. One.
