Box Iron
c. 1900A hollow iron which has a fluted hinged lid which lifts from a catch at the front of the iron. Around the bottom edges of the iron are holes and there is a small catch at the back base of the iron which can be lifted and was used to control the temperature of the iron. The iron has a metal handle.
These irons were widely used in early and mid 20th century when most farm houses had wood stoves. The lid of the iron was opened and live coals were placed in iron with tongs, thus providing heat for ironing.
