Parry Field Baseball Stadium poster - First Pitch of First Game in 1982
An A3-size colour poster depicting the first pitch of the first game played at the newly-completed Parry Field Baseball Stadium in the City of Belmont, Western Australia on November 23, 1982. The poster has a 1cm black border and black and white text naming the stadium, location, time and date, teams and players.
The photograph was taken at night with two concrete light towers ablaze in the background. In the photo are the Victoria Park pitcher Scott Cameron having just pitched the ball, which is seen mid-flight on its way to the batter, Morley Eagles player Ron Malcolm. The catcher Don Knapp is crouched, ready to receive the ball, with umpire Ken Smith behind him.
When Parry Field Baseball Stadium opened in 1982 it was the premier baseball facility in Australia. It marked the end of a 47-year search for a home for baseball in Western Australia. The stadium boasted a synthetic turf infield, a computer-controlled electronic scoreboard and eight concrete light masts, varying in length from 34 metres to 37 metres, each with four tiers of lights.
Turning on the lights by WA Baseball League secretary, Doug Corker, also marked the return of night baseball to Perth after a 20-year break.
