GENERAL EMBROIDERY, PANEL
This panel for inclusion in a ladys coat is an exquisite example of the finest Chinese hand embroidery, silk on cotton 20th C. This was made by the Miao women of Huangping region, Guizhou, China as part of a festival jacket.
A colourful repeating pattern of small geometric elements form the design worked in satin and straight stitch, with occasional zig-zag lines of chain stitch.
The panel is not made up: was part of an exhibition of Chinese Tribal handwork brought out from China and held at PICA, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, in 1997. Purchased by the donor for her textile collection and later gifted to the Guild.
