Washing Machine, Hoovermatic Twin Tub
c. 1960Electric washing machine with built-in spin dryer with a white enamelled rectangular metal body mounted on four swivelling castor wheels. Top section made of white plastic, with plastic washing tub on the left and a stainless steel vertical spinning cylinder on the right hand side. Access to the tub and spinner is via individual sideward opening white plastic lids.
A round black plastic washing agitator is fitted into the back wall of the tub, and has six small protruding blades. The power cord and a corrugated plastic water draining hose enter through the back of the machine.
A grey plastic control panel is located in the top of the machine next to the spinner lid, and consists of two rotating plastic white knobs fitted with grey plastic insert covers, and blue direction arrows. The left side control knob controls the water pump, which rotates to either fill, wash, spin or empty the washing tub. The right side knob is the washing timer, which can be rotated to select one of four pre-set times.
