RUINS OF NEWCASTLE POLICE STABLES, TOODYAY, PRIOR TO RESTORATION
A B&W photo showing the rear view of the former Newcastle Police stables - part roofed with corrugated iron.
Centre to the roof line of the building are 5 narrow openings in the stonework medium used, brick work is seen to the corners.
To (left) end of structure, 2/3 up from the ground, is a metal pipe - centre to the wall - going to the corner.
The stables are surrounded by dry grass, a small tree to left & right.
A fence is in the fore ground and in the background at left is the 1907 lock-up.
The Newcastle Police Stables in Clinton Street, Toodyay were built in 1891, and remained in use until the mid 1950s.
Around 1956, after a severe storm, the roof of the stables was removed as it was declared unsafe. Over the next two decades the walls further deteriorated through storm damage and as a result of the 1968 Meckering earthquake.
This photograph from the museum collection shows the stables prior to restoration in 1977.
