Brass Stirrups
Brass half shoes with bar at instep for stirrup straps on a saddle. Toes are narrow and pointed. Decorative floral patterns support bar on both sides and top of toe area. Small circular hole in sole.
Elaborate brass ‘Conquistador’ stirrups like these originated in South America in the 16th century, after Spanish colonisation saw the rise of domesticated horses as a means of transport. Originally worn by riders to protect their feet in battle, as centuries progressed they remained in use as protection whilst traversing difficult terrain on horseback.
