The measuring tape is made of thin steel, used to measure flat distances. Small metal studs along the tape are the same size as one link in a surveyor’s chain - 0.66 feet, or 7.92 inches. In modern surveying, these have since been replaced by electronic distance measurement tools such as digital theodolites and GPS.
