Dexter racing bit

Overview

Chrome plated ring bit. Mouthpiece consist of two horizontal bars of metal that link together in the centre of the bit. Each bar tapers in width towards middle and has rounded ends with a circular hole through which passes a circular ring in a kind of hinge fashion. Just above the mouthpiece on each side the ring forms a 'corner'. This 'corner' has a circular hole through which passes a small loose ring. Above the mouthpiece, and passing through each small ring, is a wide circular ring whose diameter is equal to the length of the mouthpiece.

Historical information

This horse bit incorporates the upper ‘snaffle’ bit with a large ring, which would fit around a horse’s lower jaw. These are particularly designed for racehorses and popular amongst jockeys as they make it easier to prevent their rides from ‘lugging’, i.e. drifting too much in one direction.
