Overview

Cabinet card with a studio portrait of Maria Ray sitting on an upholstered seat backed by drapery. She is wearing a heavy silk outfit with a boned and beaded jacket with stand-up collar, lace jabot and cuffs. Her upswept hair is topped with a lace 'dress cap' and she holds a folded paper in her left hand.

The print is mounted on white card with an embossed border.

Historical information

Maria Josephine Leplastrier Ray (c.1835-1908) was married to Captain Henry Nathaniel Ray (c.1829-1879) and lived in Hawthorne, Melbourne. Their house was called Maida. Children: Mary Josephine 'Minnie' b.1859 (married to St John Alder Biggs, lived in Claremont and went onto England), Emma Georgiana b.1861 (married to Skinner), Henry George b.1862 (a solicitor who went to Vancouver), Arthur Charles b.1864 (worked with Raymond Sharkey), Herbert Walter (South African War and then onto Canada) and Florence Edith b.1875 (married to Raymond John Sharkey).

Raymond John Sharkey an architect, surveyor and amateur photographer was born in 1868 in New South Wales. Raymond was a Claremont resident when he died at an early age.
