Sharkey's First Home, Esperance

Overview

Florence Edith Sharkey, dressed in a long light skirt and dark blouse with white collar and cuffs and holding a hat, is standing outside an archway over a white picket gate. The fence, arch and entrance to the house are covered in flowering plants and a bicycle is propped by the fence. The house is built with corrugated iron and has a decorated barge board and sash windows. In the background are sand dunes with some plant growth.

Historical information

Florence Edith Sharkey (1875-1932) was the daughter of Captain Henry Nathaniel Ray and Maria Ray nee Le Plastrier whose family came from Rouen in France.

Married Raymond John Sharkey at Christchurch, Hawthorn in Melbourne in 1899.

Lived in Esperance, WA while Raymond worked in the Esperance area.

Later lived at 'Wainomi' 3 Victoria Avenue, Claremont.

Had four children Edith Josephine (Jo) (b.1902), Marie Ray (Peggy) (b.1903) , Maida Winsome (b.1906) and Raymond John Bruce (Bruce) (b.1911).

Raymond John Sharkey an architect, surveyor and amateur photographer was born in 1868 in New South Wales. Raymond was a Claremont resident when he died at an early age.
