Historical information

This Chivas Regal whisky bottle was purchased and kept by the Wray family of Armadale to commemorate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It is unknown if they purchased the bottle in 1953 or purchased the empty bottle after the coronation. The bottle was made by Spode of England. The whisky was distilled in Aberdeen, Scotland by Chivas Brothers Limited. In 2022 Queen Elizabeth celebrated her Platinum Jubilee (6 February marked 70 years since she acceded the throne on her fathers death), being the first British monarch to ever achieve this commemorative event. In 2015 she became the longest ruling British monarch.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection that represents the districts once strong community and social links to the British Empire. The collection is significant as it can tell the story of a community that had social, family, economic and cultural links back to Great Britain. Following Australian Federation in 1901 the district like much of the country was predominately made up of people with British heritage. In the 1960s and 1970s the district was a popular spot for British migrants which ensured the district retained many of these links for decades to come.
