TOURNIQUET - ST JOHN CANVAS

Overview

Long rectangle canvas strap, tapers to a point at one end. At other end strap feeds through a rectangle metal buckle, folds back and is sewn in place. On the strap near the buckle is a raised curved solid object covered in cloth. It is sewn across the strap. Sewn on to the strap on the opposite side to the raised object is a hollow wood rod with a rope threaded through it. The wood rod is designed to be twisted putting pressure onto the raised part of the tourniquet.

Half way along the strap is a back stamped circular logo. [THE ST JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION] text around edge and a cross in the middle.

Historical information

Tourniquet that was used by the Armadale Women's Emergency Corps (AWEC). One of the skills that members of the Corps. trained in was first aid and members were issued with first aid kits. The AWEC was formed and run by Constable Roy Fletch, local police man and 10th Light Horse veteran. The Corps consisted of around 40 local girls including Sylvia Bailey (later Anderson). The Corps. was trained in first aid, stretcher bearing, did marching drills and was instructed in rifle shooting. The tourniquet was produced by the St Johns Ambulance Association who also assisted with the first aid training for members of the AWEC.

Statement of significance

This collection of objects is associated with the Armadale Women's Emgergency Corps (AWEC) which was a volunteer organisation formed as part of a local defense and support system in the Armadale Kelmscott Road Board during World War Two. The Corps was created and run by Constable Roy Fletcher of the Armadale Police Station and was made up of local single women from the district.
