Overview

Dome shaped helmet with stiff broad brim around edge. Grey cloth sewn over helmet and top of brim. Grey button on top of helmet. Strip of grey cloth wrapped 6 times around middle of helmet above brim. Sewn in place. 4 riveted holes around middle of helmet.
Brown leather inlay on inside of helmet. Green cloth cover underside of brim. Band of white cloth mesh around inside of helmet near edge. Chin strap attached under inlay. Chin strap made up of three pieces of leather. Middle piece attached to side pieces by metal buckles. On inlay in middle is a round white label with red text. Inlay covered by clear plastic to white mesh band.

Historical information

The pith helmet was worn by Robert (Ted) Cox at the Kelmscott Railway Station where he was the Station Master from c1950 to August 1970. The helmet was to be worn only in the summer. He was the last stationmaster at Kelmscott as the position was abolished by the Western Australian Government Railway.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection of that is associated with the history of rail within the City of Armadale. The arrival of the railway to the City of Armadale in 1889 saw the district change from one that was isolated from Perth due to distance (approx 30km from Perth) and a poorly maintained road. to one that had quick access via the train line. The train line meant not only the rapid transport of people but also of mail, news, ice and goods into and out of the district.
