WAISTCOAT - BLACK
Black wool and synthetic fabric, five button waistcoat. Waistcoat has a V neck that ends where the top button is. Buttons are round and black and are sewn into place down right side with stitched button holes on left side. There are two pocket on each side. Two bottom pockets. On right side the second pocket sits just above the bottom pocket and has a flap over the top of it. Top left pocket sits over the breast and has two compartments inside it. The inside compartment is small and would allow a pen sized object to fit into it. The second compartment is larger. Back panel of the waistcoat made from a synthetic blend material.
Inside of waistcoat has a cream fabric lining with pattern of three brown vertical lines.
Wedding suit used by Lambertus 'Bertus' Huizenga when he married Lammechiena 'Lammie' Zuidenga on 25 June 1929 in Groningen, Holland. For the rest of his life Bertus would continue to wear the suit of important church functions in Holland and in Australia. The bow tie was purchased later to replace the original tie worn at the wedding. In June 1955 the family moved to Western Australia and settled on Forrest Road in Forresdale where Bertus worked as a painter. He would often ride to jobs as far away as Fremantle on his bike before eventually purchasing a car. Bertus was also an accomplished organ player. The family, in 1961, moved to 24 Fourth Road in Armadale where they lived until the 1980s. Bertus passed away in 1980 age 77, Lammie passed away in 1984 age 80.

This collection of objects is associated with the experiences of families and individuals who migrated to Australia in the 1900s and settled in the City of Armadale. The collection represents the challenges they faced in starting a new home in the City, reasons why they chose to come to Australia and the successes they achieved. The collection also tells the story of the important impact migrant families and individuals have had on the cultural, economic and social history of the City of Armadale and how they and their descendants became an important part of the local community.
