MASK - WOODEN CARVED WITH LIZARD DECORATION

Overview

Oval dome shaped hand carved decorative mask, coloured black with three red rimmed holes, two forming eyes, one bottom middle forming a mouth. At the top of the mask us a raised stylised lizard head flanked by its front legs. Eyes and nostrils are painted on the front of the lizard face, its carved mouth is painted red. Under the mouth of the lizard, carved on the main body of the mask is a long gold coloured stylised tongue that widens out to a bulbous end that curves to the right at its end. The rest of the mask has painted decorations of cream circles with lines radiating out from the middle. inside the circle are blue, red, green and orange concentric rings and painted decorations that are banana shaped with curved dark green, red, light green and black lines.
On the reverse side screwed into the middle, near the top is an eyelet screw with a string loop tied to it.

Historical information

The wooden mask was purchased by Astit Olszowy and her husband Richard during a trip to Bali and Lombok in 1993. Astit was born in Indonesia and moved to Australia when she married Richard. Astit quickly became an active member of the Indonesian community in Perth. Part of her role was to promote and celebrate Indonesian culture in Perth. Astit also liked to collect reminders of Indonesian culture when ever she went back and display them in her family home.
This carved wooded mask was purchased in Lombok and features a stylised lizard on the oval decorative mask.

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collction that tells the story of individuals and families that either voluntarily or were forced to leave their home and migrate to Western Australia from 1829 to modern day. These stories relate to leaving family and a known lifestyle and culture behind, embarking on a journey that for some was long, and creating a new home in an unfamiliar land with an unfamiliar culture.
