OVERCOAT - GREEN

Overview

Green wool coat with collar and front lapels. Down left side are four green round buttons with button holes on the opposite side. Pockets on both sides of the coat at the front, located midway up the length of the coat. The opening to the pockets are on a diagonal, and face toward the back of the coat. Just above the cuff of each coat sleeve is a shot arrow pointed flap held in place by a green button. Down the back of the coat is a seam with a split a quarter of the way up/
Inside of the coat lined with brown cloth. Square white makers label on inside over left breast with blue and red text.

Historical information

This has was worn by Lamberus ' Bertus' Huizenga in the 1960s and 1970s whenever he left the family home at 24 Fourth Road, Armadale. Many who know Bertus remarked they never saw him without this hat.
Bertus was born is Holland in 1903. On 25 June 1929 married Lammechiena 'Lammie' Zuidenga in Groningen, Holland. In June 1955 the family moved to Western Australia and settled on Forrest Road in Forresdale where Bertus worked as a painter. He would often ride to jobs as far away as Fremantle on his bike before eventually purchasing a car. Bertus was also an accomplished organ player. The family, in 1961, moved to 24 Fourth Road in Armadale where they lived until the 1980s. Bertus passed away in 1980 age 77, Lammie passed away in 1984 age 80.

This collection of objects is associated with the experiences of families and individuals who migrated to Australia in the 1900s and settled in the City of Armadale. The collection represents the challenges they faced in starting a new home in the City, reasons why they chose to come to Australia and the successes they achieved. The collection also tells the story of the important impact migrant families and individuals have had on the cultural, economic and social history of the City of Armadale and how they and their descendants became an important part of the local community.
