Pat Garrity's Chaff Cutting Plant on the farm Coompatine
c. 1898A black and white photograph of a chaff cutting on the Garrity owned machine, farm is 'Coompatine'. Very large steam driven machine under a tree in front of a hay stack. Thirteen men and two women. Wooden post fence. 'Coompatine' farm is owned by the Haddleton Family and is 16kms north east of Katanning.
Mechanical chaff cutting was very new and it was the custom for one farmer to hire his men and machine to other farmers.

On the back of the photograph handwritten in pencil at the top of the photograph is "Original homestead of the Haddleton family" and below "Pat Garrity's chaff cutting plant at Coompatine 1890-1898".
Chaff cutting was a very important part of farm management and this may have been the first mechanised cutter in the district. A large group of people would indicate that it was a very important event.
