c. 1890 - 1899Dainty black velvet purse, wide ornate silver frame with metal clip fastening made in England in 1890s.
At this time, narrow waists for ladies the height of fashion. Bags were small, hung from the waist drawing attention to the well cared for hands and slender waists. It also meant the hands were left free to lift a long skirt, carry a muff or parasol. A revival of the medieval chatelaine in 1700s.
